Day 1 in Italy
					Side note: Our flight was delayed 3 hours in Ohio because a hydaulic pump on the plane was leaking. When we arrived in Rome, they had given away our hotel room. Nikki was very good with her Italian though and the guy at the hotel found us a room at a small B&B around the corner for "costa eguale."
Nikki after getting off the plane for our transfer in Ohio. We flew from Burlington to Ohio to Rome.
Nikki looking pretty tired after our 9 hour trip from Ohio to Rome. This is in the train station at the Rome airport. We took a 25 minute train ride from the Airport to Rome Termini train station.
After we checked into our hotel, we went to the vatican museum. This is the wall outside the Vatican.
Nikki. Notice the bronze doors to the Vatican Museum up on the left are closed. oh well....we will come back another day.
The exit was still open though.

As we turned the corner, apparantly the pope was dissapearing back into his apartment. (marked with the crimson colored drape)
We stuck around and took some shots of St. Peter's Square. You can see the Pope's apartment with the red drape again in this picture. He usually only makes appearances on Sunday and Wednesday. This was some special event on a Thursday. We never did find out what it was.
The Swiss guards and what looked liked young boyscouts paraded around the square. ...guess we'll never know what was going on.

On the way back to the train, we walked by the Pope's residence.
Of course we had to stop for gelato. I had melone. It tasted exactly like fresh cantalope. I was hooked. Nikki had tiramisu. We need this stuff in the US.
